Gina Lopez, the late former Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), remains one of the most passionate voices for environmental protection in the Philippines. Her anti-mining advocacy became a national movement that awakened Filipinos to the importance of sustainable development and the urgent need to protect our natural resources.

A Leader Who Chose the Environment Over Profit

During her time as DENR Secretary in 2016–2017, Gina Lopez took a bold stand against destructive mining operations. She believed that no amount of profit could replace the clean water, fertile soil, and healthy forests that sustain communities. Her famous quote, “You can’t eat gold,” captured her deep conviction that the environment should always come before corporate interests.

The Fight Against Destructive Mining

Lopez initiated a nationwide audit of mining companies, which led to the suspension or closure of several operations that violated environmental laws. She exposed how irresponsible mining destroyed mountains, polluted rivers, and displaced local communities. Her actions were controversial, facing strong opposition from powerful business groups and some politicians—but she stood firm.

Empowering Communities Through Sustainable Livelihoods

Beyond banning harmful mining practices, Gina Lopez promoted eco-tourism and community-based enterprises as alternatives. She believed in empowering local people to protect their own environment while earning sustainable income. Projects in Palawan, Zamboanga, and other provinces showed how eco-friendly tourism can create jobs without destroying nature.

Legacy of Love for the Earth

Even after her term ended, Gina Lopez continued her advocacy through the Gina Lopez Foundation and ABS-CBN Foundation’s Bantay Kalikasan. Her programs focused on reforestation, river rehabilitation, and education about environmental care. She proved that true leadership means serving both people and the planet.

Why Gina Lopez’s Advocacy Still Matters Today

Today, as climate change and environmental degradation worsen, Gina Lopez’s message remains more relevant than ever. Her life reminds us that every Filipino has a role in protecting our environment.
